چکیده

Variable selection is a topic of great importance in high-dimensional statistical modeling and has a wide range of real-world applications. Many variable selection techniques have been proposed in the context of linear regression, and the Lasso model is probably one of the most popular penalized regression techniques. In this paper, we propose a new, fully hierarchical, Bayesian version of the Lasso model by employing flexible sparsity promoting priors. To obtain the Bayesian Lasso estimate, a reversiblejump MCMC algorithm is developed for joint posterior inference over both discrete and continuous parameter spaces. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed RJ-MCMCbased Bayesian Lasso yields smaller estimation errors and more accurate sparsity pattern detection when compared with state-of-the-art optimization-based Lasso-type methods, a standard Gibbs sampler-based Bayesian Lasso and the Binomial–Gaussian prior model. To demonstrate the applicability and estimation stability of the proposed Bayesian Lasso, we examine a benchmark diabetes data set and real functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging data. As an extension of the proposed RJ-MCMC framework, we also develop an MCMC-based algorithm for the Binomial–Gaussian prior model and illustrate its improved performance over the non-Bayesian estimate via simulations. & 2011 Elsevier B.V. Sparse Bayesian Nonlinear System Identification using Variational Inference

Bayesian nonlinear system identification for one of the major classes of dynamic model, the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input (NARX) model, has not been widely studied to date. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods have been developed, which tend to be accurate but can also be slow to converge. In this contribution, we present a novel, computationally efficient solution to sparse ...

A Brief Note on Maximum Realisable Mcmc Classifiers

We present a novel and powerful strategy for estimating and combining classi ers via ROC curves, decision analysis theory and MCMC simulation. This paradigm also allows us to select samples from an MCMC run in a parsimonious and optimal fashion. Each ROC curve, corresponds to a sample (classi er) obtained with a full Bayesian model, which treats the model dimension, model parameters, regularisa...

A comparison of reversible jump MCMC algorithms for DNA sequence segmentation using hidden Markov models

This paper describes a Bayesian approach to determining the number of hidden states in a hidden Markov model (HMM) via reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Acceptance rates for these algorithms can be quite low, resulting in slow exploration of the posterior distribution. We consider a variety of reversible jump strategies which allow inferences to be made in discretely obse...

Bayesian Inference on Principal Component Analysis Using Reversible Jump Markov Chain Monte Carlo

Based on the probabilistic reformulation of principal component analysis (PCA), we consider the problem of determining the number of principal components as a model selection problem. We present a hierarchical model for probabilistic PCA and construct a Bayesian inference method for this model using reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). By regarding each principal component as a poin...

Comments on "Joint Bayesian Model Selection and Estimation of Noisy Sinusoids Via Reversible Jump MCMC"

Reversible jump MCMC (RJ-MCMC) sampling techniques, which allow to jointly tackle model selection and parameter estimation problems in a coherent Bayesian framework, have become increasingly popular in the signal processing literature since the seminal paper of Andrieu and Doucet (IEEE Trans. Signal Process., 47(10), 1999). Crucial to the implementation of any RJ-MCMC sampler is the computation...
